A few short weeks ago I bought an Amazon echo dot smart speaker with an Alexa Voice Services enabled.
The Smart Speaker with Alexa was great, I thought; however, after using it for
a few days, I'm not entirely impressed. So I went back to the store to get a
replacement. What happened? I went home and returned it for another Echo Dot.
The problem is, apparently, the speaker phone wasn't meant
to be a hands-free device. According to Amazon, this was actually an intended
feature of the Echo Dot, but due to bugs in the actual product, Amazon has
pulled it. According to Alexa website, the Dot has always been designed to work
hands free with no need for a headset. If you have tried to use the Dot without
a headset, then you will notice the delay in the activation of the speaker and
the volume being set to high when you turn on the unit. This is because it has
no hands free technology built in.
When you turn on the Echo Dot Smart Speaker with Alexa, it
seems to work perfectly well. But after I hung up the headset and tried to make
a call, the call did not go through. It didn't matter if I held the speaker
close to my face or not. If I kept it a little bit lifted up, the call went
through.
So I brought my Echo Dot back to Amazon and asked for a
refund. They sent me a new one. The customer service agent explained that since
the speaker was not meant to be hands free, they had to replace it. They also
informed me that they are aware of some issues with the Echo Dot's hands free
feature and they are working on a solution.
I am satisfied with the refund and the new Echo Dot speaker
phone. I have used it several times without any complaints. I also purchased
the "Alexa Voice Remote" so now when I am driving, I can activate my
voice assistant with just my voice.
I'm still not sure how long it will be before Amazon can
introduce hands-free phone capability into the Echo Dot. It's a step in the
right direction. I am just waiting for them to fix the bugs in their product
before I buy it again. Another thing I would like to share that you can look

After using the Echo Dot on The Voice Channel of Amazon, I
have found out that it works great in group settings. You can activate it with
just your voice so you won't need to hold the phone to order a drink or

very easy to use. If you ever have problems, Amazon will offer free technical
support. The phone itself is not anything to brag about but for those of us who
can't remember our seven digit phone number, it makes life a bit easier.
All in all, this is a very nice sound maker. It is pricey
but if you love to talk on the phone, especially while driving, it may well be
worth the price. On the other hand, if you don't want to carry a portable
speaker with you, the Echo Dot is not a bad choice. As long as you remember to
turn it off when not in use.
For the price of $300, I think the Echo Dot speaker phone is
well worth it. In addition to making and receiving calls, it can be used for
connecting to the web. To do this, you have to download the Kindle for Fire
program, which gives you access to millions of books and articles. Just be
careful to turn it off before walking away from any computer.
